**What kind of art do you make and what informs it ? Visual Art - So far Drawings and Paintings of my ideas, thoughts, dreams, life, feelings, perspectives, religion, culture, reflections, reactions, reality and everything else I didn't mention. As an artist I consider everything and nothing in order to make any sense....So far its worked out. As far as I can remember drawing is something that has always come natural to me. Sometimes I can express without thinking too much about the images I create. It doesn't mean I don't have taste or direction because I do when I want to. Somedays I like to follow certain styles and techniques to keep my artwork original and to my standards, other days I don't really care and because art is like that it pushes you and your thoughts and sets dimensions as to what art can be, its unlimitted... When I started painting I felt I was able to take my drawings a step further. Sometimes it became unnecessary to create an image. The violent strokes of paint alone express the thoughts and emotions. One painting can take a few minutes to several days. Sometimes I may take a while due to the media I am working with. I like painting with all media. I like overlapping oil, acrylic, crayon, spray paint to permanent marker on any surface canvas, paper, cardboard, plywood, rough or smooth surfaces. To me art has no limits and is timeless until tomorrow when I or some one else can prove otherwise. **Please write a short bio ? I am the fourth of five brothers, born in Brownsville and raised in both Brownsville and Matamoros. My greatest memories as a kid was living in front of the Edlestein Park on Polk and 12th street where we lived for a long time and met all my friends which till this day I still speak too. We were heavily into skateboarding and building ramps and when we weren't sk8ing we were listening to rock and punk music playing guitars and forming bands .Traditionally, don't get me wrong, the family parties were still accordion conjunto music, quinsieañeras, piñatas and tamales..It was a diverse lifestyle that I am proud. **How long have you been creating art ? The earliest memory I have is since second grade, but on a more serious level since 1995 -1996 right before I met Carlos Gomez of UTB. I was attending Texas State Technical College and I lived in the dorms. I had alot of time to think about everything and I guess I must of started to put my thoughts on paper in drawings and it just reflected much more than that...It my hunger to draw and paint my thoughts took of like wild fire..Thats how I ended up at UTB in drawing and painting class, I guess I just wanted to know more...In a way I wanted to understand how art was created in a formal level too...I learned alot in those classes, but the experiments on my own took me alot farther and the direction I wanted to go, which is the biggest reason why I never went back to formal trainging. **Do you have and artistic statement ? "I am a big believer of the idea that art should have no limits and should exist with or without museums or galleries. The purpose of making art should be greater than where it is to be exhibited. If art sells and you feel a success because it pays the bills or buys things, there should be nothing wrong with that, a plumber, carpenter or doctor will feel the same way for the work has served its purpose for its success." **Where is the best place to exhibit in the RGV and why ? Well if you see my artist statement you can get an idea, "everywhere". I will say that I have exhibited at UTB Richardson Art Gallery, Imagenes Art Studio Paseo Plaza, Brownsville Museum of Fine Arts International Art Show, Amigos Artistas Art in the Park "IBC El Ranchito Park and the new Dean Porter Park Event Center", 409 Gallery, Port Isabel -Bellula Park Antique and Flea Market, BSPA - Latin Jazz Festival: Capital Theatre and Jacob Brown Event Center and last but not least the Brownsville 77 Flea Market all of which I have had an awsome time doing so and will continue to do so. Most recently I was invited by Carlos Gomez, Chicano Artists, Proffessor, BFA and Curator to exhibite at the Richardson Art Gallery at the University of Texas at Brownsville: blue.utb.edu/artgallery , A show of non-commercial artist. Currently I will be exhibiting to small paintings at the Galeria 409 in Brownsville Texas. The show "Small Works" opens Dec. 14, 2006. I have been drawing and painting for several years now but I have only barely begun to exhibit my artwork since January 2005. I have participated in several art shows since 2005 including the 2005 and 2006 International Art Show at The Brownsville Museum of Fine Arts www.brownsvillemfa.org where I have received an honorable in the following three categories: acrylic and oil, mix media and pastels. In May 2006 entertainment writer Sarah William wrote an article on The Scoop section of the Brownsville Herald www.brownsvilleherald.com about my contribution to the local art scene. Colorful geometrically composed forms representing an abstract visual of light and shadow of a man and his instrument. There is no one true way of saying what represents what but you can find comfort in its simplicity. The rich sky blue color that represents that back ground is the balance that holds and echoes the form in place.. As I painted this creation I thought of my own experience when I play the guitar and how I feel the connection with the instrument.. A connection that makes the instrument become part of oneself like an extra arm with strings.

Here is a picure of me and Vincent Valdez at his group exhibition openning Sept. 30, 2006 at the Historic Museum of Brownsville Texas. The exhibited art work was the private collection of the Vela family.. In attendance and also exhibiting was also Cesar Martinez. The exhibition also paid tribute to Luis Jimenez who has recently past away. I encourage everyone to go see this exhibition. You will definitely not be disappointed. The Collegian Volume 59, Issue 5 - September 18, 2006 Art show with a ‘punch’By Marie MelendezStaff Writer An art exhibit featuring the work of four emerging artists opens at 6:30 tonight in the Art Building’s Richardson Art Gallery. Art Professor Carlos G. Gómez, exhibit curator, described the work of Mauricio Saenz, Gabriel Treviño, Jesus De la Rosa and Luis Valderas as “art with a message” and a “punch.” “The idea [is] to help artists who are trying to be very honest and sincere in producing art that is non-commercial,” Gómez said. Saenz, who graduated from UTB/TSC in 2003, “has a lot to say and is becoming very much aware of society and the stuff that goes on in it,” Gómez said. “His art is affected by things that cause pain.” Treviño’s style is the “most bizarre” and “people will have more questions about his work than anybody else’s,” he said. “He has a lot of energy.” De la Rosa is “more of the contemporary painter. … His stuff is going to be a little more mainstream, somewhat pop-culture,” Gómez said. Valderas has a much larger audience. “His delivery of the message is more universal. His target is not limited just to certain people,” he said. The exhibit, which is part of the Patron of the Arts program, runs through Oct. 5. Admission is $3. Gallery hours are 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday.

Gómez Opening September 18 at 6:30 in the Richardson Gallery University of Texas, Brownsville, Texas Southmost College Patron of the Arts Show continuing unit October 5 Thursday Gallery hours Monday, Wednesday and Friday 10:30-3pm Tuesday and Thursday 10:30-7pm gallery@utb.edu http://blue.utb.edu/artgallery/ 882-7097 Gabriel Treviño, Mauricio Sáenz, Jesús de la Rosa, and Luís Valderas are four young artist that are trying to produce artwork that has meaning and have much to offer the general public. I carefully selected these four for the reason that they are concern with what is occurring in our times and are far removed form the typical decorative art that seems to plaque most galleries and museums. Trevino is from Brownsville, Texas and his dedication to art and everything that has to do with art has impressed me. His energetic paintings are strong and as such have much to say. Though he has very little formal training, he has the intellectual capacity to study on his own. Saenz is the most technical of the group and his social political paintings are well done. The Matamoros/Brownsville artist has developed a surreal and somewhat dreaming approach and his artwork is sure to provoke deep feelings. He has a BA from UTB in art education. De la Rosa's artwork is more cutting edge then the rest of the group. The Ohio State MFA recipient is well versed in contemporary art dogma and his work reflects it. The "upper" valley native also holds a BFA from UTPA. Valderas is the oldest of the group and the most experienced artist. He has a respectable resume and his dedication to Chicano Art and his Project MASA are strong indicators of his commitment. Like de la Rosa he too is from the upper valley and holds a BFA from UTPA. *Carlos G. Gómez, MFA is a professor, artist, and curator. He has curated over 100 exhibitions.

I feel that I have lost sight of what is important to me which is simply just painting as I did before 2005, before I started exhibiting in art shows. Lately I have produce to meet deadlines and try to be at every Brownsville Art Show. Another thing that I have thought about is a one man show. A body of work carefully studied and produced to a higher standard. An accomplisment difficult to acheive but rewarding in every aspect. I want to deliver greatness in every painting I do. I want every viewer to feel like he or she is in the presence of something unique and impessive. I have started wanting to do so many things so fast . Before I new it I was saying well now if I only do half the things I say I am gonna do. I feel I have burnt out an unwanted thing. I speak from the heart on this one. I want to succeed as a great artist and nothing less.

Here is a painting I did for my brother Miguel on May 9, 2006. It was made with acrylics on canvas. He braught an already stretch acrylic primed canvas to my house a couple of weeks ago and requested a painting that complimented two great paintings that he purchased from me last year: "Cara Descompuesta" and " Jesus vs Serpent". It is a fairly big size painting: 2.5 x 4 . The painting to me represents the search for identity and characteristics of a female in an illusive dream. The woman in the painting looks back at the viewer without comprehension or exitement as if in a hypnotic state of mind. A sensation one feels when meeting a person of the opposite sex for the first time. It is a moment in nature inside us and around us. Well for that matter it is I feel a good painting. Forget the stars! I have yet to see one wish come true.. The city has too much pride, didn't you read the paper. How can you do this without affecting that. Its all a big set up by the haves to the have nots. It is a miracle mankind still exists. Not by the passion of life, greed or hopeless cowards of the big corporations in the glass, I feel disallusion. The price of gasoline will finish us all. Salud, compadre, let us drink some more.. The music is up on the rise. The cats are mewouing in discontent. When will they ever be content ? I lost my sense of well being. It is at the great degree of the anatomy of the reason and so on, I read the book. It is not about relegion or the political triumph. Pride of the lion in the hunt, thats what is all about. To me the real world is stranger than fiction. It is no strange reality to read about war or pandemic , deaths or world misery next to slogans, media, ads and big corporations pushing for sales. "It is the mixed message I get from this surreal media that is reflected on the paintings". The strange feeding of information may make people not care about the truth and or reality. I can picture people fascinated about the newest suv or the newest sparkling cell phones, than realizing that thousands of birds are being killed to keep a deadly disease from mutating. A choice of reality: between fashion and famine, a blockbusters movie or a 5 year old war. Yet maybe the mix media messages served in this chaotic balance of good and bad is what keeps us sane and able to sleep at night. This drawing was done sometime in 1996 at the TSTC dorm room. It was a request of a friend to execute a drawing Nazi tank commander. These commanders are to direct the tanks actions for the crew below. Above the commander in the skies and in the ground is the bizarre world he sees. After several days of war the commander is beaten and worn out. He travels not in a conscious level.

BIO- Life of the Artist

Gabriel Trevino born in 1976, second youngest out of four brothers.. Born and raised in Brownsville Texas, located in the southern most tip of Texas bordering Mexico(Matamoros). Raised by both parents Hecter and Antonia with Mexican customs and traditions. Parents are hard working minimum wage earners that did there best they could to raise and keep a good honest family. Growing up to Mexican-American traditions and learning both languages and becoming part of the bicultural experience. Daydreaming in class began the art career with doodles and cartoon characters. Highschool electives led to mechanical drafting and art class. 11th grade received the first two awards and recognition as an artist in a valley art competition for drawings:"The Never Coming God" and "Distracted". Due to no college desire and peer pressure dropped out of high school with GED to work odd jobs and for two years. Several drawings with pencil and crayons were made during this time. It wasn't long before influence and advise from parents and brothers to go to college in 1996. Enrolled in Art Class at UTB with professor Carlos Gomez a Chicano painter. After showing Gomez some of the previous artwork of pencil drawings Gomez recommended advance drawing class and also introduced oil painting. In the first few semesters several paintings and drawings were produce aside from class projects due to none stop work driven by a new found passion and hunger for art. Gomez offered a one man show in the summer 1998 at the UTB Richardson gallery. Unfortunately all the passion and hard work in painting did not pay off on the other classes and low grades cancelled the financial aid. After failing out of college and no money to pay to return it was time to work. From 1999 to 2004 worked at full time job in an automotive manufacturing company but remain painting in spare time..Married Dahlia in 2000 and first born Michelangelo in 2002. After several years of the kickback family life in January 2005 entered the Brownsville Museum of Fine Arts :2005 International Art Show where received two honorable mention ribbons in category oils/acrylics and mixmedia and sold a painting. Due to the return of the hunger and passion to paint and exhibit and not so many galleries to exhibit, on the weekend began exhibiting at the local flea market where 5000 people go on Sundays alone throughout the year when there wasn't any exhibitions. This painting inspired the Alternative Media -Bird Flu art exhibition. Please click on :Alternative Media file, to see pictures of the opening of the art show. Life is but a dream of unconscious thoughts. Floating faces, crowded spaces, heroes lost and the after life ? In the old falling buildings the words are engraved forever with gentle sound vibrating until they tumble down. You should go the the shore and meet the giant women standing tall nude in her expressions. Vanishing in the eyes a king with no kingdom confronting evil and defeat. She fears doom life is calling yet were to young to hear. In the distance the shadow of greatness awaits in awkwardness. Why must it all be ? Me, I smoke a cigarette with time patience and calm. It is just a single thought.

Check out Imagenes Studio Art Show @ Paseo Plaza on 802 next to UMIX that opens 1/20/2006 and is up until 1/22/2006. I am still under debate if I will make an appearance have until the 1/15 to decide. I will be sure to post a definite a la mera hora..Stay tuned for that. THE CACTUS PLANT In the feilds of the cactus plant, we are watering the faith with rain. All travelers suited for life in the other side all agree, we look forward to a remarkable year of harvest. "We must move on foward if we are to make it anywhere". Strangers stare with no dispare crawling up against our thoughts. "Find comfort my son we are almost anywhere". The black crows follow us like angels as they fly above in the summer sky. The next morning we rise to the attention of hope and hunger. The city is bright and modern, but the people don't seem to care. Its easy to lose your mind with hope, let us rest one more day against the cold brick. ............................................................................................................................................... ............................................................................................................................................... CAREER SUICIDE "Career suicide", my wife tells me. What do you do for a living ? Live and paint. I also work in the automotive industry. I serve one of the big three. Can you truly explain what your paintings mean ? Yes and no, maybe. When I am hungry I eat, when I feel I paint. An artist is always working. He must be stragetic in what he does, everything must be meaningfull. He is on the clock, soon to get old. In the end he must turn in a great life. Great enough so that people never forget. Sometimes I feel like a musician with no music, a poet with no words. So I paint sounds with strokes and express my thoughts with my artwork. I sit now and ponder. There are art shows to come. Here is to the sake of infinite madness and to the unveiling of masterpieces in modern art. Will to create history. Will to create art.
